- Rice - 1 cup
- To or dal - 1/2 cup
- Shallots/small onions - 6-8 (sliced)
- Garlic - 4 cloves (crushed)
- Tomato - 1 (chopped)
- Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
- Red chilli powder -1 tsp
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Dry red chilies - 2
- Curry leaves - 1 sprig
- Ghee or oil - 1 tbsp
- Salt - to taste
- Water - 3 cups
Method (step-by-step)
1.wash and soak rice and toor dal for 15-20 mins. Drain well.
2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Temper mustard, cumin, red chilies, curry leaves.
3. Add shallots and garlic. Saute until golden.
4. Add tomato, turmeric, chili powder. Cook until soft.
5. Add soaked rice and dal. Stir well.
6. Pour in water, salt. Pressure cook for 3-4 Whistles on medium heat
Serving suggestions:
- Pair with appalam or pickle
- Add a dollop of ghee for extra richness
- Great with boiled eggs or raita
