Authentic Bisi Bele Bath Recipe | Karnataka's Style One-Pot Sambar Rice.
Introduction
Bisi Bele Bath is one of my all time favorite comfort meals "from South Indian."I recently made it on a cozy weekend, and the aroma of the freshly grained masala filling my kitchen instantly took me back to traditional Karnataka flavors. The name literally means "Hot Lentil Rice"-where Bisi= hot, Bele=lentils, and Bath=rice dish. This one-pot meal combines rice, toor dal, vegetables, tamarind, and unique spices blend to create a rich, tangy and satisfying dish. If you've never tried Bisi Bele Bath before, "you're in for a warm,flavor treat!"
Ingredients πΏ
For The Rice & Dal:
- Rice - 3/4 cup
- Toor dal - 1/2 cup
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Salt - to taste
- Water - as needed
For The vegetables:
- Carrot - 1 (chopped)
- Beans - 8-10 (chopped)
- Green peas - 1/4 cup
- Potato - 1 small (cubed)
- Onion - 1 ( sliced)
- Tomato - 1(chopped)
- Tamarind - small lemon-sized (soaked)
For Tempering:
- Mustard seed - 1/2 tsp
- Dry red chilies - 2
- Curry leaves - 1 sprig
- Asafoetida - a pinch
- Ghee/ oil - 2 tbsp
- Cashews (optional) - 6-8
For Bisi Bele Bath masala(or use store- bought masala)
- Coriander seeds - 1 tbsp
- Chana dal - 1 tbsp
- Dry red chilies - 4-5
- Cinnamon - 1 small stick
- Cloves - 3
- Fenugreek - 1/4 tsp
- Grated coconut - 1 tbsp (optional)
(Roast and grind into fine powder)
Instructions:
- Cook rice and toor dal together until Soft and mushy. Mash and keep aside.
- Boil chopped vegetables with turmeric and salt until soft.
- Prepare tamarind extract and keep ready.
- Heat oil, temper mustard, red chilies, curry leaves, hing, and cashew.
- Add onions and tomatoes. Saute till soft.
- Add boiled vegetables, tamarind extract, and Bisi Bele Bath masala.
- Add mashed-rice-dal-mixture. Mix well and adjust consistency with water.
- Simmer for 5-10 mixture. Finish with a spoon of ghee.

- Accompaniments: boondi, potato chips, papad, or raita.
- Garnish with fresh coriander or fried cashews for extra richness.
