Ingredients

For marination:
  • 500g fish (Rohu, Surmai, Ilish or any firm fish)
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

For gravy:

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves (optional)
  • 2 onions (finely chopped)
  • 2 tomatoes (pureed or chopped)
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • ½ tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Instruction

Step 1: Marinate the fish

Mix fish with lemon juice, turmeric, chilli powder & salt. Set aside for 20–30 mins.

Step 2: Prepare the base

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves. Add onions and sautΓ© until golden. Add ginger-garlic paste and cook till raw smell goes.

Step 3: Add tomatoes & spices

Add tomatoes and cook until oil separates. Add coriander, cumin, chilli powder, turmeric. Mix well.

Step 4: Add water & simmer

Add required water for gravy. Let it simmer for 5 minutes.

Step 5: Add fish & cook

Gently add marinated fish pieces. Cook uncovered for 8–10 mins on low flame until fish is tender. Garnish with coriander.

Serve hot with steamed rice, jeera rice, or chapati, goes well with onion salad and lemon wedges.
